How trading works in Roblox games and how to avoid scams (2026)

How trading works in Grow a Garden, Murder Mystery 2 and Steal a Brainrot, how it differs from Roblox's own trades, and how to spot the most common trading scams.

Trading is the heart of many Roblox games. In Grow a Garden you trade pets, in Murder Mystery 2 knives and guns, in Steal a Brainrot brainrots. Sadly, wherever there are valuable things, there are also scammers. Below we explain how trading works in the most popular games (as of October 2026) and how to avoid losing your items.

Two kinds of trading on Roblox

Before we get to the games, here is one difference that a lot of people mix up.

Roblox's own trades are about Limited avatar items, meaning collectible things you can no longer buy in the shop. They work through a player's profile (three dots, then Trade Items). Today they require age verification and a Roblox Plus subscription (or the old Premium), and Roblox takes a 30% fee on Robux added to a trade. These trades are final: Roblox does not undo them.

In-game trades are systems built by the creators of specific games. Pets from Grow a Garden or knives from MM2 are not Roblox items, they are just data inside that game. Every game has its own trade window, its own rules and its own protections.

Grow a Garden: Trading Ticket and the trade window

In Grow a Garden, trading arrived in update 1.17.0. The developers added it specifically to cut down on scams. Before that, players could only give each other gifts.

Here is how it works according to the game's wiki:

  • You need a Trading Ticket from the Gear Shop to trade.
  • You can trade only pets and harvested crops (and Sheckles). One trade fits up to 13 items.
  • Hover over an item and you will see its value in Sheckles and the crop's weight. At the top of the window you can see the total value of both sides, so it is easy to tell whether the trade is fair.
  • After an item is added, a 5-second countdown starts. If someone removes something, the countdown starts over. This protects against a last-second swap.
  • After accepting, both sides still have to confirm the trade.
  • Accounts younger than 10 days cannot trade (they can still give and receive gifts).

Murder Mystery 2: level 10 and the item limit

In MM2 you trade weapons, pets and some extras. Effects, emotes and radios cannot be traded.

  • Trading is available from level 10. This requirement was introduced on 28 December 2021 as protection against item duplication.
  • You click a player in the list in the top right corner and choose Trade. The other person accepts or declines the request.
  • After every item you add, you have to wait 6 seconds before you can accept.
  • One trade can hold 4 different items (but several copies of each).
  • You can turn off trade requests with the button under the player list (this option is not available on mobile).

Players check weapon values on community value lists. The MM2 wiki says the most popular one in 2025 was Supreme Values. How such values come about and why they change is explained in our article on how weapon value works in MM2.

Steal a Brainrot: Trade Machine and Trade Plaza

For a long time Steal a Brainrot had no official trading. In February 2026 the game's creator added the Trade Machine, which according to the wiki was mainly meant to make scams harder. Today it is no longer a machine on the map but a button in the game.

Over time some useful options were added: marking the brainrots you are looking for (LF), and a trade history. The wiki also notes that in April 2026 scripts were patched that let scammers take brainrots without giving theirs in return.

In June 2026 the Trade Plaza appeared, a separate place for trading brainrots, bases and gears. You cannot steal there, and you send a trade by walking up to someone's base. The Plaza has three parts: the regular one, Pro (requires 25B/s) and OG (100B/s and an OG brainrot). The most common trading scams

In its article How to avoid trading scams, Roblox lists patterns that repeat in every game. Here they are in plain words:

Trust trade, or "you go first, I'll pay you back"

Someone asks you to hand over an item first, and says they will "give it back in a sec" or give you something better. Usually they disappear along with your pet. Roblox is clear: do not agree to any deal where one side has to trust the other.

"Lend me" and "I'll sell it for you"

A request to lend an item or an account is a classic. So is the offer "give me this, I'll sell or trade it for you". Here too the goal is to get you to hand over something with no guarantee at all.

Last-second swap

The scammer shows a valuable item, and right before you accept, they remove it or swap it for a similar-looking, cheaper one. That is why games have a countdown after every change. Before you click Accept, check every item once more.

Trades outside the game

Deals like "my pet for your Robux on Discord" or "an item for real money from a stranger" are the easiest way to lose something. Roblox does not enforce deals made outside its official features and will not give you anything back if the other side backs out. Only the official trade windows and official sales features are safe.

Requests for your login

"I'll log into your account and check your inventory", "I'll give you a rare pet, just give me your password". Nobody honest needs your password or your two-step verification codes. We describe how to secure your account in our Roblox account security guide.

How to protect yourself: a checklist

  • Only trade in the official trade window in the game or on Roblox.
  • Never hand over anything first outside the trade window.
  • Check every item before accepting, especially after the countdown resets.
  • Compare values in two places before you agree to a "super offer".
  • Take your time. Pressure like "quick, I'm leaving soon" is a warning sign.
  • On Roblox, turn on the trade quality filter (Trade quality filter in the Trading & inventory settings). It hides clearly unfair offers.
  • Report scammers with the Report Abuse button. It helps other players too.

A simple rule from Roblox itself: if a trade feels like a bad idea, it probably is. And if you are thinking about buying an item rather than trading for it, read how to avoid scams when buying Roblox items.

Frequently asked questions

How do you trade in Grow a Garden?

You need a Trading Ticket from the Gear Shop. Walk up to a player with it, send a trade request, add pets or harvested crops, and after the countdown both sides accept and confirm.

What level do you need to trade in MM2?

In Murder Mystery 2, trading unlocks at level 10. It is a protection against item duplication, introduced at the end of 2021.

Will Roblox give back items lost in a scam trade?

Trades made through the official window are final, and Roblox does not enforce deals made outside its official systems at all. That is why checking the trade before you accept is so important.

What is a trust trade?

It is when one person hands over an item first and hopes the other will keep their word. Roblox lists this kind of deal as one of the most common tricks scammers use.
