Murder Mystery 2 looks like a simple game of hide and seek with a knife, but good players win surprisingly often. The difference is a few habits that are easy to pick up. Below you'll find tactics for every role, as of October 2026.

Roles at a glance

In Standard mode, roles are randomly assigned every round. As described on the official Roblox game page and the wiki:

  • Innocent: runs, hides and tries to figure out who the Murderer is. There can be up to ten innocents.
  • Sheriff: the only player with a weapon that can kill the Murderer. There is one per round.
  • Murderer: has a knife and has to eliminate everyone without getting shot.
  • Hero: an Innocent who picked up the gun after the Sheriff died and shot the Murderer with it.

The chance of becoming the Murderer starts low and goes up with every round where you weren't the Murderer. You get the knife 10 seconds after the round starts.

How to play as Innocent

Your goal is to survive and collect coins. In one round you can collect up to 40 coins (up to 50 with the Elite gamepass), and the longer you stay alive, the more experience you get.

Tactics that players recommend on the wiki page for the Innocent role:

  • Listen. When you hear the sound of a stab, carefully peek out of your hiding spot and check who it was.
  • Don't stick with the crowd at the start. If you don't know who the Murderer is, a group of players is the perfect target for them.
  • Keep moving. The Murderer always checks the obvious hiding spots. Switching rooms confuses them more.
  • Turn off the radio and put your pet away. Radio music gives away where you are, and a big pet ruins your hiding spot in a tight space.
  • Don't trust anyone. If someone walks toward you and you aren't sure who they are, walk the other way.
  • A body with no sound = be careful. If you see a dead player and didn't hear a stab, the Murderer is probably using the Ninja power.
  • Don't rush for the gun. When the Sheriff dies, the Murderer often waits near the weapon. Go for it only when you are sure they aren't there.

Know who the Murderer is? Describe them in chat as best you can. Just remember that after you die, players still in the round can't see your messages.

How to play as Sheriff

You have the only weapon that can end the round. The most important rule: if you shoot an innocent, you both die. That's why patience is your main skill.

  • Don't reveal that you are the Sheriff. The Murderer will hunt you first.
  • Watch the crowd from a distance. Stand somewhere open where you can see a lot of players, but not right in the middle of a group. Sooner or later the Murderer will strike there.
  • Shoot from close or medium range. According to the wiki page about the Sheriff role, the gun reloads after every shot and is fairly inaccurate.
  • Don't let anyone get behind you. If someone walks up and you don't know who they are, back away.
  • Watch out for fakes. The Murderer can have the Fake Gun power, and some Innocents have the Scary Key toy, which looks like a knife.

The wiki notes that the Sheriff has an easier time on bigger maps like Mil-Base, Bio Lab and Factory.

Controls (PC)

Press 1 to take out the gun and click the left mouse button to shoot. On mobile, just tap a player to take the shot.

How to become the Hero

The Sheriff dying doesn't end the round. Their gun stays on the map and any Innocent can pick it up. If you shoot the Murderer with it, you become the Hero, and the win counts toward your survived rounds as Innocent. There can be several Heroes in one round, but never at the same time as a living Sheriff.

The rules are the same as for the Sheriff: if you hit an innocent, you both die. When the Hero leaves the game, the gun appears again somewhere on the map.

How to play as Murderer

You have a knife that you can stab with or throw. On PC you throw it with the E key or by holding the left mouse button, and on mobile with the throw button when a green icon appears on a player.

Tactics from the wiki page about the Murderer role:

  • Act normal. Walk like everyone else and take out the knife only at the last moment, when someone is close.
  • Sheriff first. Approach them from behind. Following them around the whole time looks suspicious.
  • Use walls. On some maps you can hide around a corner and wait until the Sheriff comes within stabbing range.
  • Turn off effects that give you away. Burning bodies all over the map are an obvious clue about who is doing the killing.
  • Don't camp. After you kill the Sheriff, don't stand next to the gun until the end of the round. You only win if you eliminate everyone.

The Murderer has an easier time on the maps Office 3, Hotel 2 and Mansion 2.

Murderer powers (Powers)

Powers only work when you are the Murderer. You buy them in the shop for coins or diamonds. According to the wiki page about Powers:

Power What it does Price
Footsteps shows players' footprints free
Sleight faster knife throwing and cooldown 1,000 coins
Ninja stabbing makes no sound 1,000 coins
Sprint run 50% faster for 5 seconds 3,000 coins
Fake Gun a fake gun for the whole round 3,000 coins
Haste 10% faster running with the knife out 3,000 coins
Trap 4 traps that freeze for 4 seconds 3,000 coins
Decoy 3 copies of the Murderer that block a shot 3,000 coins
Ghost invisibility for 5 seconds 6,000 coins
X-Ray see through walls for 4 seconds 6,000 coins

We listed the prices in coins. You can also buy every power with diamonds.

Ninja works well at the start, because it's cheap and takes away the innocents' most important clue: sound. As an Innocent, always keep in mind that the Murderer might have X-Ray, so even a good hiding spot isn't completely safe.

Game modes

Besides Standard, there are two more modes:

  • Disguises: everyone gets names from the NATO alphabet and similar-looking characters, so you can't recognize anyone by their looks. Radios and pets are turned off.
  • Assassin: everyone has a knife and a target. You have to kill your target and avoid getting killed. Powers are turned off here.

Weapons and trades

You spend the coins you collect in rounds in the game's shop, for example on weapon crates. If you're starting to collect knives and guns, read our article on where weapon value comes from in MM2 before you agree to your first trade. Our guide on how not to get scammed with Roblox items will also come in handy.

Selected MM2 weapons and sets are also available in DzikShop. For delivery you only need your Roblox username, and the support team hands over the item through an in-game trade.
