If your child plays Roblox, more changed in 2026 than in the last few years combined. Chat now requires an age check, younger players got their own account types, and the old parent PIN is gone. This guide walks you through all the settings one by one (as of October 2026, based on the official Roblox pages).

What changed in 2026

Three things worth knowing before you start clicking:

  • Age check before chat. Every user now has to pass an age check to write in chat. Anyone who doesn't pass simply can't chat.
  • Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts. Since 16 June 2026, children aged 5 to 8 are placed in Roblox Kids accounts, and people aged 9 to 15 in Roblox Select accounts. From age 16 it is a regular Roblox account. This is described in Roblox's announcement from June 2026.
  • The parent PIN is gone. Settings are now managed from your own parent account linked to your child's account.

Without a linked account you can't change any of the options described below. The easiest way is to start from the child's account:

  1. On the child's account, open Settings (on a computer it's the gear icon in the top right corner, in the app it's "More" and then the gear).
  2. Open Parental Controls and choose Add Parent.
  3. Enter your email address and follow the instructions in the email. You can create a new account or use an existing one.
  4. Confirm that you are an adult: Roblox asks for an ID document or a credit card.
  5. Choose Agree to link the accounts.

From that moment you change your child's settings from your own phone or computer. You can also see the daily playtime and your child's friends list.

Step 2: your child's age check

The age check decides which group your child is placed in and what they can do in chat. There are two methods:

  • Facial Age Estimation: a short recording with a phone or computer camera. Roblox says photos and recordings are deleted after processing.
  • ID document verification: only available from age 13.

Roblox splits players into age groups: 5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 and 21+. In chat, a child talks by default with people from similar age groups and with Trusted Friends.

If the age was estimated wrongly, the linked parent can correct the child's date of birth. Note: a parent can only do this once, so check the date carefully.

Roblox Kids and Roblox Select at a glance

Account Age Games Chat
Roblox Kids 5-8 years Minimal or Mild ratings off by default, parent turns it on
Roblox Select 9-15 years up to Moderate rating introduced gradually, with limits
Roblox 16+ everything except Restricted (Restricted is for adults only) on after the age check

Games in the Kids and Select catalogs go through extra review. Hangout-type games (for meeting up and talking), games with free drawing and games with sensitive topics are removed from the catalog for younger players. For example, Grow a Garden is available to Kids and Select accounts in the US.

Step 3: which games your child can launch

In the parent dashboard, pick your child's account, then Settings you manage, Content restrictions. You have several tools here:

  • Content maturity: a slider with the content level. Minimal means things like occasional mild violence, Mild means more mild violence and light humor, Moderate means moderate violence and fear.
  • Blocked games: blocks a specific game regardless of its rating. A blocked game still shows up in search, and the block works from the next time the game is opened.
  • Allowed games: your child can ask for a game outside their catalog. The request arrives by email and in the dashboard, and you click Allow or Don't Allow.
  • Sensitive issues: games about sensitive social, political and religious topics. They are blocked by default for children under 13.

Step 4: chat and friends

In the parent dashboard, choose Communication. The most important options:

  • Game chat: in-game chat with people from similar age groups. Children under 9 need a parent's approval for it.
  • Game direct chat: private messages in a game (the /w command). Under 13 it needs a parent's approval.
  • Friends chat: chat with friends from Roblox.
  • Party: joining games together. Allowed only for verified people over 13.

In the friends section you can look through your child's list, and also block or report specific people. Requests to add Trusted Friends from children under 13 go to the parent, who has 24 hours to decide. Also remember that these settings don't cover chats that game creators built themselves.

Step 5: spending limit and notifications

This is the setting parents care about most. The path: Settings, Parental Controls, Settings you manage, Spending restrictions.

  • Monthly spending limit: a monthly limit on Robux and paid subscriptions. It resets at the end of the calendar month, and any unused amount does not carry over.
  • Spending notifications: you can choose a notification for every transaction, alerts for high spending, or no notifications. Alerts arrive when your child spends the equivalent of 100, 250 or 500 USD in a given month, and then every ten transactions.

Three important exceptions:

  1. The limit does not cover gift cards. Topping up with a gift card goes through despite the limit.
  2. On some consoles the Roblox limit may not work. On Xbox, set purchase restrictions in the console settings.
  3. The limit stops working when your child turns 13. You can still receive spending notifications.

It's also worth knowing that younger players need a parent's approval to send and receive Robux (this is a feature of the Roblox Plus subscription). Where Robux come from and which scams to watch out for is covered in our article what Robux are and how to get them.

Step 6: screen time

In the parent dashboard, scroll to the Screen time section and set a daily limit (Daily limit). When your child uses it up, they can't use Roblox for the rest of the day.

Parents can set time limits for Roblox Kids accounts and for children aged 9 to 12. For teens from 13, Roblox suggests talking about playtime rather than imposing limits.

What changes as your child grows up

  • Under 13: the full package: viewing the friends list, blocking and reporting, Trusted Friends, time and spending limits.
  • Under 16: the parent can still change chat settings and can block or allow specific games.
  • Ages 16-18: the parent has less direct control, but can still see spending, playtime and the friends list.

A few things no setting can do for you

Filters help, but talking works best. Agree on a few rules together: you never give your password to anyone, links from strangers are a trap, and "free Robux" is always a scam. You'll find concrete steps to protect the account (two-step verification, backup codes) in the Roblox account security guide.

If your child trades items or wants to buy something outside the game itself, read the articles how trading works in Roblox games and how not to get scammed when buying Roblox items together. Roblox describes the full list of tools on its Parental Controls page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I link a parent account to a child's account on Roblox?

On the child's account, go to Settings, then Parental Controls and Add Parent, enter your email and follow the email instructions. The parent confirms they are an adult with an ID document or a credit card.

Does Roblox still have a parent PIN?

No. Roblox replaced the parent PIN with an account that has parent permissions, so you change your child's settings from your own phone or computer.

How do I set a spending limit on Roblox?

On the parent account: Settings, Parental Controls, Settings you manage, Spending restrictions, Monthly spending limit. The limit covers Robux and subscriptions, but not gift card redemption, and it works until the child's 13th birthday.

How old does a child have to be to use Roblox chat?

Everyone has to pass an age check to use chat. For children under 9, chat is off by default and only a linked parent can turn it on.

What are Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts?

They are account types launched worldwide on 16 June 2026: Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. They have a limited game catalog and stricter chat settings.
