Grow a Garden mutations: how they work and how to get them (2026)

Mutations in Grow a Garden can turn a crop worth pennies into a crop worth millions. We explain the multipliers, variants, how mutations combine and where to get them.

Mutations are the fastest way to big money in Grow a Garden. The same Carrot can be worth a few Sheckles or several hundred times more, depending on what is on it. Below is everything you need to know, without memorizing formulas (as of October 2026).

Mutation and variant are two different things

The game separates two kinds of crop "upgrades".

Variants are Silver, Gold, Rainbow and a few rarer ones. A crop can only have one variant at a time. According to the Grow a Garden wiki, the multipliers look like this:

  • Silver: x5
  • Gold: x20
  • Rainbow: x50
  • Diamond and Jelly: x50
  • Ember: x60

Gold has a 1% chance to appear on its own while the crop grows, and Rainbow only 0.1%. Sprinklers and the Pig, Praying Mantis and Bacon Pig pets raise those chances.

Mutations are everything else: Wet, Chilled, Shocked, Disco and hundreds more. A crop can have many of these at once, and they make the biggest difference.

How the game calculates a crop's price

Simplified, the price is: base value of the crop times weight, times variant, times mutations. Two things are worth remembering.

Weight is squared. A crop twice as heavy as normal is worth four times more. That is why it pays to leave big crops and mutate them instead of selling right away.

Mutations add up, they do not multiply. You subtract 1 from each mutation, add the results, and add 1 at the end. Example from the wiki: Shocked (x100) plus Frozen (x10) is 1 + 99 + 9, so x109. Takeaway: one strong mutation is worth more than five weak ones. Five x2 mutations only give x6.

A variant, on the other hand, does multiply with mutations. A Gold crop (x20) with a x109 mutation is worth 20 times more than the same crop without the gold.

Example with numbers

Take a crop that is worth 100 Sheckles with nothing on it. If it grows as Gold, it is worth 2,000. If it also catches Shocked and Frozen (x109 together), its price jumps to 218,000. And if it is also twice as heavy as normal, you multiply the result by 4 and get 872,000. Same crop, just a different "loadout".

Mutations worth knowing

The full list has over a hundred entries, so we picked the ones you will run into most often:

Mutation Multiplier Source
Wet x2 rain, storm, sprinklers
Chilled x2 Frost weather
Moonlit x2 night
Glimmering x2 fairies (Fairy Event)
Pollinated x3 bees and bee swarms
Bloodlit x4 Blood Moon
Verdant x4 Scarlet Macaw pet
Frozen x10 Wet or Drenched + Chilled
Chakra x15 Kitsune pet
Molten x25 Lobster Thermidor pet
Fortune x50 Golden Goose pet
Aurora x90 Aurora Borealis weather
Shocked x100 storm (Thunderstorm)
Celestial x120 Meteor Shower
Disco x125 Disco Bee pet, Disco type weather

At the very top of the list today are Goldsparkle (x500) and Astral (x365), but those are mutations for players with a lot of progress behind them.

Where to get mutations

Weather

The simplest source, because it works on the whole server at once and costs nothing. According to the weather page, the regular weather events that show up on their own include Rain, Thunderstorm, Frost, Night, Blood Moon, Meteor Shower and Aurora Borealis. Rain and Thunderstorm also speed up plant growth by 50%.

A simple habit: when a storm or a Meteor Shower starts, do not rush to harvest everything. Give your plants time to catch mutations.

Pets

Some pets apply mutations on their own: Disco Bee (Disco), Kitsune (Chakra and Foxfire Chakra), Dragonfly (Gold), Golden Goose (Fortune), Scarlet Macaw (Verdant). Others transfer them: T-Rex spreads a mutation from one crop to others, and Spinosaurus gathers several mutations into one crop. We broke down which pet gives the most in the Grow a Garden pet ranking.

Gear and events

The game also has Mutation Sprays, which apply one specific mutation (for example Wet, Chilled or Pollinated). Sprinklers from the Gear Shop (from Basic Sprinkler up) give Wet and raise the chance of Gold and Rainbow.

Events almost always bring their own mutation. The Fairy Event 2026, running since 10 October, releases fairies across the map every 60 minutes, and they sometimes give crops Glimmering. You then hand those crops in at the Wishing Well for Fairy Points.

Combining mutations

Some pairs of mutations turn into a stronger mutation by themselves. A few examples from the wiki:

  • Wet (or Drenched) + Chilled = Frozen (x10)
  • Wet (or Drenched) + Sandy = Clay (x5)
  • Fried + Cooked = Sizzled (x18)
  • Celestial + Aurora = Cosmic (x240)
  • Galactic + Cosmic = Astral (x365)

There are also mutations that grow over time. Amber (x10) turns into Old Amber (x20) after 24 hours, and into Ancient Amber (x50) after another 48 hours. A crop like that is worth keeping instead of selling right away.

Watch out for a trap: when mutations combine, the ingredients often disappear. Wet and Chilled stop counting separately once they make Frozen, so always check that the result is worth more than the sum of the parts.

5 tips to avoid losing mutations

  1. Favorite your best crops. In your inventory you do this with a right click (on mobile, press and hold). You cannot sell favorited crops by accident.
  2. Leave big crops on the plant. Weight is squared, so a mutation on a big crop gives a lot more.
  3. Be careful with Dragonfly. It will not make Gold from a crop that already has a variant, for example Silver.
  4. Butterfly eats mutations. It removes 5 mutations from a crop and turns it into Rainbow. It pays off with weak mutations, but not with Shocked or Disco.
  5. Keep an eye on mutations for Ascension. According to the wiki, Ascension may require a crop with one of the mutations Chilled, Frozen, Wet or Windstruck, so it is good to have such a crop on hand.

What next

Mutations are half the success, and the other half is a good planting and selling plan. We lay it out in the guide on how to earn Sheckles fast in Grow a Garden. If you are just starting, the beginner guide for Grow a Garden 2 will also help, because mutations work a bit differently in the sequel.

Frequently asked questions

How do mutations add up in Grow a Garden?

They add up, they do not multiply. You subtract 1 from each mutation, add the results together, and add 1 at the end. Shocked (x100) and Frozen (x10) together give x109, not x1000.

How much do Gold and Rainbow give in Grow a Garden?

Gold is a x20 variant and Rainbow is x50. A crop can only have one variant at a time, but regular mutations stack on top of the variant.

How do you get the Frozen mutation?

Frozen (x10) forms by itself when a crop has Wet or Drenched and Chilled at the same time. You get Wet in the rain and Chilled during Frost weather.

What is the most valuable mutation in Grow a Garden?

According to the wiki, the highest multiplier right now is Goldsparkle (x500), with Astral (x365) right behind it. The list changes with almost every event.
