In Steal an Egg you do not only steal from monsters. According to the description on the game page you can also steal eggs from other players, which means they can steal from you. This post shows where you really lose eggs and how to defend against it. As of October 2026.

Three places where you lose eggs

Before you start defending, it helps to know where it is most dangerous.

1. In the biome, at the nest. Here the main threat is the guard. If it catches you, the egg drops on the ground, and according to AllThingsHow any player nearby can pick it up. Other players like to wait near nests with rare eggs.

2. On the way back. This is the most dangerous moment. You are carrying an egg, you are slower (especially with a big egg), and any player with a Bat or a trap can take it from you. A player only keeps the egg as long as they stay on their feet and keep running.

3. In the base. Here the sources disagree, as we explain next.

What is known about pen safety

We will not pretend it is clear. The PvP guide from GameBoost claims that the base is not fully safe, and that unhatched eggs and unprotected pets in the pen can fall prey to other players. The same guide says that the area right around the base works as a zone that is safer from direct attacks. The other guides we checked (AllThingsHow, Bloxodes) do not describe stealing from the pen at all and focus only on the way back. The game wiki does not settle it either.

What does this mean in practice? Act as if an unhatched egg is at risk. If your pen is safe, you lose nothing. If it is not, you just saved an egg.

Defense on the way back

Since most eggs are lost on the way, this is where you can gain the most.

  • Start moving right away. Bloxodes advises starting your return early, not when the guard is already standing next to you. Every second of hesitation is a second for the guard and for other players.
  • Choose open ground. GameBoost notes that the Bat has a short range and works best in narrow passages. In an open area it is harder to hit you.
  • Watch the ground. Traps are usually visible on the floor. Avoiding one means a saved egg.
  • Do not run through a crowd. Where there are many players, there are many Bats.
  • Keep a Speed reserve. When you are faster than the ones chasing you, it is harder to catch you. For big eggs, AllThingsHow recommends 15-20% above the biome requirement.

Guards stop chasing you once you cross the border of your safe zone. According to AllThingsHow, a theft only counts once the egg reaches the base.

Traps at the base entrance

The Bear Trap is not only an attack weapon. According to the wiki you have an unlimited supply of them, but you can have at most 3 on the map at once. After a trap goes off it returns to you, and the player who steps into it is stuck in place (the wiki says 7 seconds, the guides say 5 seconds). You cannot place a trap in the safe zone.

How to use them for defense:

  • Place them on the path leading to your base, right past the border of the safe zone.
  • Set them where someone could be waiting for your return.
  • Change their positions from time to time so others do not memorize the layout.

Note: according to the wiki, the trap works on players who are carrying an egg. So it will not stop someone walking with empty hands.

The Bat on the way back

GameBoost advises keeping the Bat ready on the way back too. If someone catches you and the egg drops, you can fight off the attack and pick it up again (E key) before they do. How exactly the Bat works and how to upgrade it is described in our post on how to steal eggs from other players.

Shorten the time an egg stays unhatched

The shorter an egg sits unhatched in the pen, the fewer chances for others. A few ways:

  • Do not hoard eggs. GameBoost advises hatching quickly and not stockpiling.
  • Skip Growth. According to AllThingsHow, a growing egg has a Skip Growth option that speeds up hatching.
  • X2 Growth Speed gamepass. According to the wiki, eggs grow twice as fast with it (467 Robux).

You can check how long each egg takes to hatch in the post about egg hatching times.

Pick a calmer server

According to Roblox data, up to 7 people play on one Steal an Egg server. There are no private servers, but AllThingsHow describes a simple way to find an almost empty server:

  1. Open the Servers tab on the game page.
  2. Set the sorting to the fewest players (Fewest Players).
  3. Click Load More a few times until small servers show up.
  4. Join one where one or two people are playing.

The server is still public, so someone can join later. But fewer players means fewer rivals at the nests and on the way to the base.

Checklist before every return trip

Before you pick up a valuable egg, go through these five points in your head:

  1. Do I have a Speed reserve for this egg? If you are cutting it close, take a smaller one.
  2. Which way am I going back? Choose a route across open ground, away from players.
  3. Who is nearby? If a few players with Bats are hanging around the nest, wait a moment or change your target.
  4. Are my traps on the way to the base? Place them earlier, not while running.
  5. Do I have room in the pen? The egg you bring back you put down right away and leave to hatch.

These few seconds of thinking cost less than losing an egg you waited five minutes for, until the nests reset.

When someone keeps attacking you

Stealing eggs is part of this game and anyone can be a target. But if someone focuses only on you for a long time, the easiest fix is to switch servers. If they also insult you in chat, you can block them and report them in Roblox. We collected the rules of safe play in our post on Roblox account security.

Summary

Most eggs are lost on the way, not in the base. Head back right away, avoid crowds and narrow passages, place traps on the path to the base, keep your Bat ready, and do not keep unhatched eggs for long. And if the server is too crowded, look for a smaller one. You can find the game basics in the beginner's guide.
